About the poem

Gutiérrez Nájera's poem is a longing for a good death: to die at dusk, out at sea and facing the sky, without prayers or agony, rocked by the swell of the waves, like a bird taking flight or the slow-setting sun.

And to die young, before time destroys the gentle crown, while life still says «I am yours». Written around 1887, it is one of the voices that herald Spanish-American modernismo: death not as a terror, but as a luminous image that fades away.

The verse is kept in Spanish. Translating it in passing would replace the work with a paraphrase of it.
